A member of the popular boy band Big Bang abruptly canceled an advertisement shoot yesterday after an announcement by prosecutors of charges he allegedly smoked marijuana.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office said yesterday that G-Dragon, 23, the leader of the five-member pop group, was questioned on charges of inhaling marijuana in May in Japan when he was on tour, but was released without an indictment on Sept. 11.
The prosecutors embarked on an investigation after a tip from an eyewitness who saw the singer, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, smoking marijuana at a club in Japan. The court issued a warrant to bring G-Dragon in, where he underwent urine and hair tests, according to the prosecutors.
The urine test turned out to be negative, while the hair test verified that Kwon did smoke the banned substance, which could lead to a maximum of five years in jail or a fine of up to 50 million won ($42,000).
“I smoked a cigarette handed to me by a random Japanese guy in a club. Since it smelled different, I suspected that it would be marijuana, but I smoked it anyway,” G-Dragon was quoted by the prosecutors as saying during the interrogation.
“Given that G-Dragon is young and a first-time smoker without intention to inhale marijuana illegally, he could avoid an indictment,” the prosecutors said.
Kwon’s agency YG Entertainment released a statement yesterday:
“Kwon initially had no idea about smoking marijuana, but he later recalled the memory of puffing a cigarette two or three times, which he got from a Japanese guy at the bathroom of the club. He felt it was different than a normal cigarette and flushed it right away in the toilet.”
